Foster Care and Adoption

Who are the children in need of foster care and adoption?

Foster children range in age from newborn to 18 years and are from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. They are in need of love, shelter and adult guidance. Given these essentials, they will have the chance to thrive. Many are teenagers or sibling groups, which are the most difficult to place in homes. Some may suffer from emotional, behavioral, physical or developmental problems resulting from their family circumstances, but they are all normal children in abnormal circumstances.

The adage, “It takes a village to raise a child” takes on an even greater meaning when put in the context of the children and youth in need of a safe, secure home in our own community. These children belong to our community, and they are our shared responsibility. In a very real sense, they are our children. Together, we can give every child a childhood.

Being a foster or adoptive parent is a rewarding experience for those with a loving heart and the desire to nurture. However, you should be prepared to encounter the challenges that a child’s troubled background can present. With time and patience, you will see challenging behaviors change and receive the joy of knowing that you helped change the course of that child's life and all who they will touch.
